THE 2008 ROSSINA BOLAÑOS AWARD

for  Excellence in the Teaching of English

 

 

GENERAL GUIDELINES: 

 

The Rossina Bolaños Award for Excellence in the Teaching of English was inaugurated in January 2003 and became an annual award presented to an individual or group who has demonstrated an outstanding achievement or made a significant contribution to the teaching of English as a foreign or second language in Costa Rica.  The objective of the award is to promote and recognize creative work in the classroom, which promotes critical thinking skills as well as language skills beyond program / curriculum expectations. The award recipient will receive recognition at the annual National English Conference for Teachers of English (NCTE), a plaque, a gift certificate and/or instructional materials for his/her school or Institution, and a cash award of $300.

 

RULES OF ELIGIBILITY:

 

  • Current active ESL / EFL teachers with a minimum of two years of teaching experience in a Costa Rican school or Institution (may be public or private) are eligible. 

 

  • Teachers may be nominated by a colleague or group of teachers, a school principal or administrator a direct supervisor, a regional advisor or themselves. 

 

  • Nominations may be submitted for individual or group awards.

 

Note:  Members of the Organizing Committee of the NCTE are not eligible.

 

NOMINATION REQUIREMENTS:

 

All nominations must include the following: 

     

  1. Application Form:  an application form must be submitted by the deadline and must be filled out completely.  Please include the nominee’s full name and contact information for the nominee’s school or Institution.  The application form is available at

  1. Justification of Nomination:  provide a description of lesson/project, citing original source if adapted.  Description must include:  a) objective (s) of project or activity, b) the target audience, c) a summary of activities, and d) outcome or result (s).   DO NOT exceed 5 pages.

 

  1. Letters of Recommendation:  submit three (3) letters of recommendation from colleague educators, supervisors, principal, educational administrator who monitored and supported the project and can describe it and it’s results.  Letters must provide contact telephone numbers for each person who signs the recommendations.  One of the letters may be from one of the students involved in the project.

 

  1. Optional related material:  include additional support material; not to exceed three pages: photos of project, reports from local newspapers, school, or community.

 

Note:  Please do not submit original materials, as these items will not be returned to the candidates. 

 

SELECTION GUIDELINES:

 

The Organizing Committee of the NCTE will appoint an Award Selection Committee.  This Selection Committee may include, where appropriate, at least one representative from each of the sponsoring Institutions.  The three best-nominated projects will be selected and orally presented to the Award Selection Committee.  Selected nominees will be notified two week prior to the presentation day.

 

The recipient (s) of the award will be required to present his/her/their project at the 2008 NCTE.

 

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PROPOSALS:

 

Nominations will be evaluated based upon the following criteria:

·         Clarity of organization of project

·         Evidence of fulfilment of objectives

·         Creative / Innovative use of resources

·         Role of teacher / students in the experience

·         Creative adaptation of methodology, techniques or activities

·         Results and recommendations

This award is in memoriam of Mrs. Rossina Bolaños (March 6, 1950 – April 2, 2000), a Costa Rican educator and teacher, who dedicated her life to the teaching of English and support of English teachers in Costa Rica and the region.
